Each of these "paper pieced" murals reflects the collective spirit of the people who help create it. It becomes a symbol of unity, of working together toward a common goal.
These murals are created by many different people each painting their own square by looking at a small reference image for colors and then painting their paper to match. They are similar to a "paint by number" style however they offer more creative freedom in color mixing and applied technique. The participant often does not know what the final mural image should look like - only what their square should look like. The mural reveal where the participants see the bigger picture and how their piece fits in is one of the most awesome moments of this mural process. The phrase "trust the process" takes new meaning with these types of creations.
These murals are designed for any age and skill level as they are meant to be as inclusive as possible. As long as a participant can choose paint colors, they can paint a paper pieced mural!
Once a mural has been designed and approved, it can then be created in to a kit. A typical mural is 4ftx4ft and can be made from as few as 36 squares to 144 squares. Murals can be made smaller or larger depending on the number of participants and the space it will go in.
A participant can usually paint a square in about a 30 minute time frame. Once all the squares have been painted, the mural can be assembled and any touchups made. The paper squares that are painted are adhered to a Masonite board, glazed, and then the mural is ready to be installed. These murals can be created for interior or exterior locations.
